"I heard the news today, oh boy"

Thanks to Sunday Scribblings for the prompt: In the news. “How about a headline you'd like to see? One that's had a big impact on you lately? One you fear is coming soon?”

Consider yourself warned: I’m being lazy in my writing of this post.

It just so happens I’m lazy with my handling of the news, too.

I grew up watching Dan Rather with my family, right before Wheel of Fortune, but keeping up with the news was never my strong suit. I went through a brief CNN stage, but that came too late to help me through grad school, during which time a knowledge of current events would have been really helpful. But how was I supposed to keep up with the news when I was busy trying to read 300 pages a night? One of my favorite professors used to come into our class everyday with newspaper clippings relevant to the course topics. That really helped.

I’ve never been much on reading the papers. Maybe I was subconsciously swayed by people in my community referring to our local paper, The _______ Recorder, as The ______ Disorder. Nowadays I get my news online. I’m bad about just reading the headlines. I often steer clear of the actual articles; the writing makes me cringe. I just want to red-line it.

Speaking of headlines and articles:

A headline I fear is coming:
U.S. Sinking
Widespread obesity blamed

A headline I’d like to see:
Fat-free, No-Calorie Ice Cream Developed
Also cures cancer

A headline I’d really like to see:
Peace on Earth
World leaders quoted as saying: “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

And finally, a headline and article that overwhelmed me today, in a good way:
Elsie McLean, 102, oldest golfer to ace hole

"Goodnight, and good luck."

I just love your dream headlines! Jay Leno or David Letterman ought to feature them :)

You are very clever, and have a great sense of humor! I really liked your headlines, especially about the icecream. Does that include chocolate peanutbutter? I read about the hole-in-one. I wish we had more headlines like this!

I think it's love. Cancer-curing ice cream, the desire for decent writing even in journalism, and Ed Murrow.

And for khambagirl: if it doesn't include peanut butter, I ain't playing along.

It's the "Why didn't we do this sooner?" that makes it art. :-)
