Don't suppose you could pass it off as just testing the interviewer, huh?
Once in the '70s, desperate for work, I interviewed at one of those job-placement outfits. The fellow asked me, "What would you do if a potential employer required you to shave your beard?"
I told him I wouldn't want to work for an employer who expected me to follow such a ridiculous rule.
'Course, I never heard back from them. I assumed I didn't have the proper professional credentials or some such silly thing.
Sorry the editing job didn't work out; hope you have not been likewise desperate!
Does this mean you've finally thrown in the job that's been making you so miserable, OMG?
Or are you searching for an 'escape route'?
Either way, best of luck. Even in the present tough times, I'm sure you must be at the top of the candidate pile for many of the vacancies that are coming up.
(And I don't think anybody ever reads a covering letter that carefully, even for an editing job!)

JES - Thanks for stopping in. That's a good story, and a good reminder to stick to my guns. Should I ever get that far, that is. :-)
